Today was a fun day. We started with a lecture from Rachel about "what it means to be a scenic artist." Too many notes to recreate here, but Rachel made some neat observations that I enjoyed. People often hear what I am doing and say something to the effect of, "wow, you're going to be a scenic designer" or "don't forget me when you become a famous designer in New York!"
Not to burst your bubble...but I am not a designer. But this does seem to be a point of confusion, as people may not really understand what I'm actually doing here :) Rachel explained it like this: just as a musician is to a composer, and a dancer is to a choreographer, so is the scenic artist to the scenic designer. We are the "musicians," so to speak, in executing the score that is created by the designer. We don't come up with the ideas, we execute them and interpret the desires of the designer.
Anyways, it was a fun bit of food for thought. After that we had our first drawing lecture. "What is drawing," etc, etc...and we were given our first drawing assignments. We're all enjoying finally being able to dig in and learn new stuff. I had a little moment of realization while doing the homework: I get to do this for a living. Not to state the obvious, but how cool is that? I love this stuff.
Okay, so enough typing. Here's some pictures that I've been meaning to post:
