FRIDAY, MAY 1, 2009
2009 has already been an eventful year.
I lost my job in January, largely due to the fact that my boss was a jerk (and by jerk, I mean the one of the most self-righteous, slimy, sick sons of bitches I’ve ever met). But in the big picture, I really am thankful that my employment ended. I was a miserable man, working at a miserable job, whose future was bleak and unremarkable. And I’m not looking back.
Unemployment was the final push that I needed to begin facing the question, “what’s next?” I refused to return to the insurance world and be stuck in a cubicle for the rest of my life.
I took the plunge and applied to the Scenic Artist Training Program at Cobalt Studios in New York. I’ve been painting locally for the theatre for over 3 years now and have fallen in love with the craft. During my dark days in the cubicle, I often dreamt what it would be like to paint for a living and finally have a job that I truly loved.
I mailed in my application to the school at the beginning of March. After about 6 weeks of silence and agony in waiting, my sister Julie encouraged (okay, forced) me to call the school and check in. Long story short, a week and a half later, I was on a plane to New York for the interview. Much to my surprise, my interview was a smash success, and I was accepted into the school on the spot!
Thus began my adventures in the Empire State! I’ll soon be living in the Catskills (pictured above in a painting by Cole Thomas), painting my arse off, and missing Colorado something fierce. I’m starting this blog to not only chronicle my new journey, but as a means to keep in touch with those that I love and will miss dearly.
Between now and September, I’ll update as the day draws near, and as preparation is underway.
