Drawing Exercises

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Another fun-filled day in Sullivan County!  After a lazy morning of sleeping in, doing a little laundry, and enjoying some leftovers for lunch, we headed to the local fair for the afternoon.  The fair is part farmer's market, part craft fair, part outdoor concert, etc.  And the most unexpected part of my day: wearing a python by the name of Jabba the Hut around my neck!  I'll post pictures when I get them (one of the other guys took the picture), but it was kind of fun...emphasis on "kind of."  The snake handler had to scold Jabba at one point when he started curling a little too closely around my neck.  A quick "love tap" to the side of Jabba's head, and he quickly remembered his manners and decided not to choke me.

We got back to the house and Alicia, Jen and I all decided to go for a bike ride around White Lake.  It was perfect weather.  I'm guessing we only went about 5 or 6 miles, but it was fun to explore the area a bit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.  I didn't have my camera with me, so no pictures of that yet.  But our drawing lectures this week have been teaching us to "see" and to strengthen our visual memory. So I snapped a little mental photo of the round hay bails in a local field and did a very quick sketch (above).  It's nothing to brag about, but I'm finding that the exercise is good for me.  And little by little, I'm hoping that my drawing will improve.

This sketch wasn't a part of the drawing homework, so the rest of the day was filled with completing our assignments.  Here are Jackie, Alicia and Sam gathered around the dining room table, working on the homework:

We basically had to recreate a series of small drawings, consisting of lines, circles, ovals, and other curves without doing any measuring (just eyeballing everything).  It's much more difficult than it sounds, but it was actually pretty fun.

Below is another shot of the gan (plus Chad, who is Jackie's boyfriend, visiting for the weekend).

Now it's getting late and I'm off to bed!  Rumor has it that tomorrow we get to actually do some painting.  I'm crossing my fingers....
